Let's do a Cross Stitch. One that is not square, but slightly out of shape, I mean oblong. Tall and thin.
I found Oblong Cross Stitch in Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches, in the chapter of Crossed Canvas Stitches.

The Whipped Reversed Fly Stitch is a tease; it looks much more complex than it is. I have enjoyed playing with metallic thread for the whipping, adding nice sparkle in the middle.

Sunday Stitch School Indigo Sampler
A small square of #373 Surface Darning Stitch was added to the Sunday Stitch School Indigo Sampler.

When you use the Surface Darning Stitch, there is such an amazing lack of thread on the back that it is a joy! You have saved a lot of thread. On the front, however, you have a lot of thread and, it took a lot of time to put it there! Save thread, waste time!
Aida Sampler
I used a light blue Perle 8 for the warp threads and a great number of short ORTs (short left-over thread ends) for the warp.
It became quite colourful.

I put the last stitch in the last 'snake'. The assembling of row #17 is completed.
I have worked hard on my kitchen cloth. One section remains.

Today I want to try the Surface Darning Stitch. It gives you an attractive woven piece of work and can be used for decorative purposes or as a smart way to cover a tear, a stain or other blemish on a garment. SDG's darning!
#373 Surface Darning Stitch is sustainable in another way, too - as it is a surface stitch, almost no thread is used on the back.
Work it like this:
1) use Aida or another fabric where there is a clear grid
2) stretch the fabric in a hoop or frame
and a suggestion:
1) RSN used the same colour for weft and warp threads; why not use two, like I did, or even more. You could make a beautiful checked darning.
