Friday Revision Homework - Stitches: 256 - 260

What does Sunbonnet Sue need in the sweltering heat and blazing sunshine of Tokyo? A sunbonnet, of course! Here is a stylish straw hat.

Sunday Stitch School - Revision: Stitches 256 - 260

We have just learned another chunk of five stitches, which means it is time for a review and a Sunbonnet Sue sampler.

The stitches are:

256 Quill Stitch

Easy and fast, this is a good basic stitch to add detached stitches or beads to.

257 Belgian Cross Stitch

Although it is a canvas stitch, it also looks good in free-form embroidery.

258 Half Herringbone Stitch

Vary it in scale and you get a different look.

259 Raised Seeding Stitch

Arch Stitch could be an alternative name! It's easy but I highly recommend using a fixative for the back to keep the loops in place.

260 Laced Mountmellick Stitch

Here we have fun dressing up alternating Mountmellick Stitch with a lacing thread.

Homework:

Sunbonnet Sue needed something. Can you guess what it was?

Friday Homework for Lesson 257: Belgian Cross Stitch

There are stitches and there are stitches. Some you fall in love with at first sight, some need time to befriend you, some get under your skin and won't leave you, and you have to live with that itch.

Belgian Cross Stitch is an itchy stitch. Once you get the hang of the movement,  of how the needle goes in and out of the fabric, you just can't stop. Try to take a break; your fingers get all twitchy and urge you to return to work. I love that feeling!

I used waste canvas to get the stitches even.

The smaller you make the stitches, the more compact the surface becomes. So Belgian Cross must be a perfect stitch for upholstery and seat covers if the work is done on a fine grid. It will be a sturdy and hard-wearing cover.

Mottled Wool Scribble Cloth

Belgian Cross doesn't like to curve and doesn't want to go wonky either!

Canvas Sampler

This was the easiest and most enjoyable of all the 39 Canvas stitches I have added to this sampler.

When will be the next time I find a stitch that gives me an itch?

Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 257: Belgian Cross Stitch

Before we start today's lesson, I want to respond to an inquiry from 'Anonymous' (i.e. a person whose name or email address I do not know and so can not answer directly) about quilt shows in Japan in 2024. I'm afraid I have not heard of any shows planned for next year, but this year the World Quilt Festival 2023 will be held in Pacifico Yokohama on November 24, 25 and 26. Here is a link to the official website, unfortunately, it is only in Japanese, but the dates and times are easy to understand, and there is a clear map. Prices for non-members are 1.800 yen for tickets pre-bought at convenience stores and 2.200 yen bought at the door on the day.

Japan Quilt Society, which organises this event, held its spring show in March this year. You can read my blog report here. I, therefore, expect there to be another show next year in spring but have no details yet.

Leaving comments on Blogger can often be troublesome. If it is difficult to sign into Google Accounts you can usually use the Anonymous option, but I would recommend ending the comment with your name for clarity.

Now for today's stitch!

Where to turn to for new stitches? Pintangle, of course. You can find Sharon's great tutorial for Belgian Cross here.

Her instructions are very clear with both text and photos.

I worked my photo tutorial on Aida and used a square of three holes:
