Friday Revision Homework - Stitches: 176 - 180

The last Sunbonnet Sue Sampler I made was a sunbonnet.

This time, for the most recent five stitches, I wanted to put them in a similar sampler - a bonnet. This bonnet is not for sheltering Sue from the sun though, but from prying eyes. I made a mourning hat where the Fancy Stitch would make a good veil.

The pandemic is far from over,  too many people across the Globe have been devastated by the high death toll, too many people have lost a loved one, too many people have wanted to put on morning wear but not been able to attend funerals or take a proper farewell.

This mourning hat is a symbol of this sadness and sorrow.

Sunday Stitch School - Revision: Stitches 176 - 180

Welcome to evening class at Sunday Stitch School.

It is time to look back at the last five stitches. Click on the title to see the instructions.

176 Buttonhole Cross Stitch

This stitch was found in a Scandinavian book and I have never seen it anywhere else. It is easy and looks good, too.

Surely this is one of the easiest stitches there is - just make one Seed Stitch next to another!

This stitch, however, is far trickier, both while you stitch it and afterwards, as it is so easy to pull it out of shape by mistake. It looks neat, though.

Once again, here is a double stitch. It is easy, and actually sits better than the single Pekinese Stitch.

Want to fill an area? Then here is one stitch you could try - Fancy Stitch.  It is easy to mistake it for Cloud Filling (which is a TAST stitch), but there is a difference in the foundation stitches which makes the overall look slightly wonky.

Homework:
How can I use these five stitches for the Sunbonnet Sue sampler? Try crayon and black thread!

Friday Homework for Lesson 179: Double Pekinese Stitch

I like the Double Pekinese Stitch better than the stitch it is based on, Pekinese Stitch. I think the loops are nicely spread out and sit more securely when there are two rows of Back Stitch to keep them in check. Also the thread used for the Back Stitch is more obvious.

Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 179: Double Pekinese Stitch

For anyone who has done the Pekinese Stitch,

today's stitch will be easy. You can guess why, when you hear the name - Double Pekinese Stitch.

I picked up this stitch from Pintangle.

Begin with a row of Back Stitch.

Then make another row parallel
to it.

Change to a contrasting thread.
Without biting any fabric
go under the second pair of
stitches, from top to bottom.

Then go under the first pair of
stitches, from bottom upward.

Third pair, downward, then
second pair, upward, and
so on.

Continue to the end of the line.

Depending on how much slack you give, the contrasting thread will be highly visible and stand out, or hardly be noticeable at all.

Here is also a good opportunity to play with unusual or 'difficult' thread.

Homework:
Work the three samplers.
