World Embroidery Day

Last week Thursday was World Embroidery Day, when we celebrate the joy of stitching.  

I filled in one block on the Canvas Sampler with #360 Basket Filling Stitch in blue.

 Furthermore, I started a sashiko kitchen cloth. It is a kit I found in the 100Yen shop called Seria.

Hexablooms

Three floral blocks were completed. Look carefully at the picture and you can see S17, T17 and U17, 

Row 17 is the last row, and what remains now is to make the flowers: # V, W, X, Y, Z and Aa. So six more blocks, and then they are all done!

World Embroidery Day

 I hope you have remembered that July 30th is World Embroidery Day. Let's all take a few, or a LOT of, stitches today.

I am celebrating by working on two projects, one is the Canvas Sampler, which is old and one I am lagging behind with. 

The other is new - a small kit of Japanese Sashiko. I was inspired by Pamela of Hokkaido Kudasai, who had bought her kits at the Seria 100 Yen shop. These kits are really good value for money and I will enjoy making a small cloth for the kitchen with my kit. When I first came to Japan, these small dish cloths or tea towels were found in every kitchen. 46 years later, kitchens now often have dishwashers and disposable microfibre cloths. Let's get some charming items back into the kitchen!

WIPW - Getting On

As you can see from this Work In Progress Wednesday report, I have been getting on with the usual work. Additionally, I promised to share the work I completed on World Embroidery Day last week, which you can see below.

Hexablooms

I added more flower blocks and the flimsy now holds 86 flowers.

Mandala

I dug into my box of braids and ribbons and fished out this line of flat flowers. I will use them on the Mandala, somehow...

Baby Quilt

The machine quilting is now underway. Here is a picture of the reverse side.

#307 Rhodes Diamond (light coral),  #308 Crossed Cretan (red) and #309 Chessboard Filling Stitch (light blue and teal)

Birthday Card

I had this stumpwork portrait in a box and decided to mount it onto a piece of card and insert it into a window card.

Here is a picture of a detail. I will show the clear portrait once the birthday 'gal' has celebrated her day.

World Embroidery Day - The Stitches I Took

I had planned to stitch on several WIPs (work in progress), but 'life got in the way', so my list had to be cut a bit.

However, I enjoyed working on two things related to Sunday Stitch School: this week's homework and the indigo stitch sampler.

World Embroidery Day, Sunday 30th July, 2023

Don't forget to pick up your needle and thread on Sunday, 30th of July. Stitch something. At home, at your Guild or in the park, with friends or alone. Start something new or make progress on a UFO. Celebrate the joy, beauty and power of embroidery. Have a wonderful day.

World Embroidery Day

Today is World Embroidery Day.  Started in 2011 in Sweden. This link is unfortunately only in Swedish, but there are some pictures to look at.

I worked on my Sunday Stitch School Stitch Sampler.

I added a few circles of fabric, stitched Stem Stitch at the edges and Bayeaux (couching) Stitch on top.

The 'thread' in the picture is actually a strand of my hair. Human hair is often used in fine Chinese embroidery and in Sweden, in the past,  jewellery was made from hair. So why not use a strand of my own hair. Grotesque or unique?

 

WIPW - Chives for Birthday

Work In Progress Wednesday includes some work in the kitchen garden. I went out to cut some chives for a

Birthday Card
which I then framed.

This is a semi stumpwork picture.

It is worked in Stem Stitch, Detached Chain Stitch, Straight Stitch, Needle Woven Picots and Single Corded Brussels Stitch.
I followed the directions in Sachiko Morimoto's book

but found it hard to shape the Needle Woven Picots into triangular shape (the base should be wider than the tip) with only two strands of floss.  Did I pull too hard? I also found that it was hard to keep even tension on the two strands so the purple petals look lumpy.

I will love to make another of the flowers in the book, but should I stay away from any with needle weaving?

Crazy for Crazy

This is the colour choice for the next octagon block.

What shall we call this block, green olives with watermelon?
Since taking the picture I have dyed the two pieces of lace, the dye is still wet so I do not know if the colours will be suitable.
The plastic ring will turn into a Dorset Button tonight.


World Embroidery Day
initiated by the Embroiderers' Guild in Sweden was held July 30th, as usual, but I was tied up with other things (repairing sunshades/awnings)!!! so I have nothing to show for this most important day to promote embroidery. Life got in the way, as they say. Sigh!

WIPW - Is Shopping Progress?

Work In Progress Wednesday took me on a shopping trip.

was in need of more thread so before I could make any quilting progress I had to buy some reels of

green Dual Duty.

For
World Embroidery Day
I completed the stump work carrot and two pods of peas.

Then I stitched the embroidery to a card and inserted in a frame, gift wrapped it, wrapped it in brown paper, took it to the postoffice and sent it flying across the Globe.

World Embroidery Day 2017

Today is an important day for promoting and taking part in embroidery.
I worked at home, on my own and for only a few hours, unfortunately.

I started on a stump work carrot. It will be made into a greeting card for someone who has a kitchen garden.

As it is not completed I will make tomorrow my own private World Embroidery Day.

It is time to promote embroidery!

World Embroidery Day is celebrated on July 30th every year, and 2017 is no exception.

Read here about how it all started in Sweden and how it has swept the Globe.

Do find time to take a stitch on Sunday.
Get together with friends or sit alone.
Stitch in school, at home, in the park, in a café, up a tree, on a mountain top, in the cabin of a yacht, in bed, on the train, in the studio or in the hammock.... Wherever you are I hope you will have the chance to enjoy needle and thread.

Make progress on a Work In Progress project or try your hand at something new. Blackwork, Hardanger, Kogin, Brazilian Embroidery, Stumpwork, Cross Stitch, Kutch work, Crewel, Hedebo, Canvas, Needlepainting, Kantha..... Whatever form you choose I hope you will enjoy needle and thread.

Who Harvested the Carrots?

I don't often make male portraits so it was a challenge, but most enjoyable.

Harvesting Carrots on World Embroidery Day

World Embroidery Day, 30th July, was established five years ago in Sweden and as the word is spreading more and more participate.

Did you take part? Did you get together and stitch with friends? Did you stitch 'publicly' in a park or at the bus stop?

I am a hermit stitcher and spend the day quietly at home trying to fit in small sessions of stitchery in my day of chores.

The embroidery I chose to work on was another stumpwork portrait. Here is a detail:

Harvesting carrots!

The portrait is a birthday card and I will show the whole portrait once the card has reached its destination, just in case the recipient is reading my blog.

World Embroidery Day 2015

I have been EXTREMELY busy recently with other things than embroidery. So I did not think I would have much time to stitch yesterday, July 30th, World Embroidery Day. However, I was fortunate!

I had prepared these items for a stumpwork portrait and I thought I would be able to get started on it at any rate, even if I did not finish until much later.

Then by sheer luck a  two-hour-assignment was cancelled and I found myself with enough time to finish the whole portrait. I even mounted it on a piece of cardboard and slipped it into a window card, ready to be sent off to someone's birthday!

I must admit, however, that there aren't a lot of true embroidery stitches on these stumpwork ladies! They are more appliqué than embroidery.

Did you have a good day of embroidery? Did you stitch with others? Will the world have more enthusiastic needleworkers next year?

World Embroidery Day - the result

I stitch almost every day, but yesterday was an absolute MUST as it was World Embroidery Day.

A long time has passed since I last made a stumpwork portrait; deciding what to do was therefor easy.

Unlike Cross stitch, Hardanger or Blackwork there is more than just embroidery involved in the making of these stumpwork portraits. First you need to stuff, appliqué and shape the face before you can start embroidering.

For the eyes, I used Detached Chain stitch, French knot, Straight stitch.
For the eye brows,  Stem stitch.
For the mouth, Straight stitch.
To add a more advanced stitch I made the necklace with TAST #98 Beaded Shell Chain stitch.
The hair is made from couched down unravelled knitting yarn.
Finally I mounted the portait onto a card.

Referring to this blog post, here is a report on what I made on World Embroidery Day, 30 July 2013.

Firstly I worked on the  'woolly worm' for my second wrist warmer.

Secondly I made another stumpwork portrait. It is such a long time since I made one I had a really good time. Here she is, a lady all dressed up for autumn chill:

The lady who introduced me to this event, Ingalill, stitched in public together with her friends and it caused a lot of attention, many stopped by to have a look and the local newspaper was there to write an article.

Also in the town of Tranås, the local press came to report. Please, notice (in the picture) that in Sweden you are never far from a cup of coffee! Well, you know I have written at lenght about Swedish coffee culture, so that is not surprising!
