Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 224: Guilloche Stitch

Several embroidery stitches make up today's combination stitch - Guilloche Stitch.

Guilloche is an architectural term for a decorative border with interwoven wavy lines. The embroidery stitch consists of Stem Stitch, Threaded Satin Stitch and French Knots.

It is featured in several embroidery dictionaries, e.g. Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches and Reader's Digest Complete Book of Embroidery. Also, there is a beautiful tutorial at Needle 'n Thread.

Stitch it like this:

Make a line of Stem Stitches.

Then make a parallel line.

Between the lines, make three columns

of evenly spaced Satin Stitches

Thread a contrasting thread, up

and down, the columns of 

Satin Stitch.

At the end of the row, return to 

the beginning of the line.

Anchor the thread underneath the

last set of Satin Stitches.

Finally, stitch a French Knot

in the middle of each circle.

By using a Milliner's needle 

with a small eye, the thread will

pass through the knot smoothly.

Completed.

Friday Homework for Lesson 223: Whipped Fly Stitch Wheel

This stitch is a bit time-consuming. Also, you need to either turn the work or twist your wrist to work your way around the circle. Apart from that, it is a fanciful stitch. Best with thinner thread, don't you think?

WIPW - A Greeting Card

Work other than stitching has kept me from making any progress on the Sunday Stitch School Stitch Sampler. 

Here is my meagre Work In Progress Wednesday report on the only work I have done.

Greeting Card

I had to make a birthday card. The floral print of this fabric was enhanced with embroidery before I attached it to the window of the card with Glove Stitch.

Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 223: Whipped Fly Stitch Wheel

 There are many ways to alter stitches, one of them is by whipping. Look at these:

From bottom: 

Whipped Running Stitch

Whipped Chain  Stitch, two versions

Whipped Wheel

Whipped  Fly Stitch 

Whipped Fly Stitch consists of a row of Fly Stitch that has been whipped and the Whipped Wheel is often seen made up of five or more spokes. 

In one of my Swedish embroidery books, 'Brodera' by Danish author Jytte Harboesgaard, however, there is a detached Whipped Fly Stitch. It produces a round shape with a Y in it.

So for today's Sunday Stitch School's stitch, I present Whipped Fly Stitch Wheel.

Begin by making a single Fly Stitch:

Then come out of the centre, with the

same or a contrasting thread.

Whip your way around the spokes,

by going underneath two spokes.

The working thread should come

out between them.

Stop when you have covered each spook

and filled the space between.
