As I reported in January, the theme is GARDENING and several of the rules have changed. Smaller size block, earlier date for contributing the blocks. More information can be found on the official website.
Now what can you do on this theme, gardening, eh? I racked my brains last week and after a visit to a botanical garden where I saw this
my choice fell on bonsai. This form of 'gardening' used to be a favourite of older men in Japan, now it has become a fad overseas and there are many foreign tourists who travel all the way to Japan to see these miniature trees.
Here is my bonsai:
Raw edged appliqué with Buttonhole stitches, and of course the Swedish flag found its way into the block!
For anyone who wants to send in and donate a block to this charity quilt project, here are the rules:
- one block per person
- 15 cm x 15 cm for the motif, add a seam allowance of 1-2 cm on all sides
- flimsy block, i.e. no wadding, no quilting
- your name should be written with pen in the seam allowance of the lower right hand corner
- your block should have reached NHK by 31st July, 2016
- enclose a note with your name, address, tel no, email address
- send to:
NHK Sutekini Handmade
2-2-1 Jinnan
Shibuya-ku
Tokyo 150-8001
Japan
Read my page on NHK for more information.
..............
Please note, this information was added after I first posted.
NHK will broadcast an episode of Sutekini Handmade with information about the show, the gardening theme and the partnership quilts.
The team leader is Eiko Okano (岡野栄子先生), famous for her funky food quilts.
Thursday May 25, 9.30-9.55 PM on NHK channel 3
Repeats on:
Tuesday May 31, 10.15-10.40 AM on NHK channel 1
Thursday June 2, 11.30-11.55 AM on NHK channel 3
If you're in Japan and have a chance, don't miss it!
Have fun!

Your bonsaï is beautiful§
All of your blocks have been so special. I LOVE that you include a bit of Sweden in each one! Maybe I will participate again this year. Thanks for the reminder!
Beautiful and especially including the Swedish flag. Thank you for inviting me to participate.
Sugoi! What a great block! I'm thinking about what I'll do now. Thanks for posting the information each year!
Did you see the program on NHK? I wonder what all those class blocks are going to be.
I still haven't come up with a final plan but have a few ideas to sort through.
Great idea for your block, nice finish.
Thanks for the info.
Thank you, and the great news is, it doesn't need watering!
The Swedish thing is an issue I have with this quilt show. It is called INTERNATIONAL but there is a shocking lack of information in English or any other foreign language, The OS games will be held in 4 years' time and the Japanese really need to improve their language skills!!!
I hope you visit my blog again as I have added some more information. It will be nice to look for your watering can in Tokyo next January!!!
Iideshou! I thought a miniature garden is just right for a Japanaese quilt show, compact living, and all that. I added some more info about the TV show that is coming soon.
what a delight your bonsai is, Helen is a fan but though I have bought her 3 they have all died she certainly does not have green fingers. Good to see the Swedish flag too
No, the programme will be broadcast later in May, but I wouldn't have known unless you had reminded me to check NHK's website,. Thank you, Julie!
Yes, it will be interesting to see the class blocks!
I added the info about the TV show on the blog post.
A fabric garden is so nice; it doesn't need any weeding or watering!
The new size (15x15 cm) means details have to be tiny and needleturn appliqué is getting too small for me, so I opted for Buttonhole appliqué. That means the quilt will not wash well...
Bonsai are VERY tricky to grow and care for, no wonder Helen were unlucky with hers. THIS bonsai, made of fabric, needs no TLC or green fingers, ha, ha.
Beautiful bonsai-quilt! I had two or three bonsais for many years but it went the way of everything ephemeral. But still keep the wonderful containers and coasters - some of them in blue just as in your quilt.
I can understand you wanted to keep the bonsai pot. They are very 'exotic' and unusual, and actually look good with ordinary plants, too, if you have something that can grow in a thin layer of soil.
Your bonsai tree is fantastic! I love that you add the Swedish flag to your blocks. I have way too many projects on the go already, but you certainly know how to tempt me with another! My boys really like to visit the Portland Saturday Market. When we do go, my eldest always stops at one particular booth to admire the bonsai trees.
DON'T add another project; spend time with your boys instead!
Yes, the bonsai are kind of crowd stoppers, but very delicate and difficult to cultivate properly. I was intrigued by them in my youth, too.
OOh!!! Great idea! I love your bonsai tree!!! So clever! Thanks for the Partnership information (again). I couldn't remember where to send my block to... Nor what the address was.... I'll get mine in the mail before the end of the month.
Please watch the TV show before you send in the block, just in case there are any other changes we haven't heard of yet. Also you need to enclose a black but self addressed Japanese postcard. NHK will print it with information about your block (which quilt it has been worked into) and then return it to you.
I like bonsai trees and yours is lovely.
