Yes, your samples do show results of using different weight embroidery threads and kinds of fabric well. I think the curved middle row of blue Pagoda Stitch on the teal cloth gives a good view of what can be done with it.
It does have a slightly twitchy look to it. I can't at the moment think of what to do with it to take advantage of that, but I'll see whether I can come up with something!

I agree with you, the regular chevron stitch is tidier. Nice examples of this one, though.

I like your samples- they curve well. I prefer the old Chevron as I can do it without thinking..too much unpicking my Pagoda version :-((
