Friday Revision Homework - Stitches 296 - 300

After a long sickness leave, I am now back on track with Sunday Stitch School. Here is the revision homework for stitches 296 - 300.

Let me start by showing this picture of Sunbonnet Sue that I made for stitches 26 - 30,  in 2017, August 4. 

It inspired me to make a similar scene.  

Sue has changed into a skimpier bikini but is still lapping up the last of the summer's sunshine while sipping on another cool drink.

Here goes:

Tokyo has been extremely hot this summer, and most people say they are exhausted. Finally, we seem to be in sight of some cooler weather. I hope I will regain my energy and have a productive autumn.

Sunday Stitch School - Revision: Stitches 296 - 300

We have now reached the 300 stitch mark and it is time to revise the last five stitches before we go on to further stitch adventures.

296 Rhodes Rectangle Stitch

It's yet another version in the Rhodes Stitch collection.

297 Raised Cup Stitch with Twisted Chain

Round and dome-shaped, it is a good stitch when you want something textured.

298 Hatamusubi

This is a Japanese knot used in Sashiko for joining two threads invisibly on the reverse side of the work. I think it can be used on the front, showing off the knot.

299 Backstitched Trellis Stitch

Do you want to use up a lot of thread? Here is the perfect stitch for you. All that backstitching will soon gobble up your thread!

300 Ring Picot Stitch

The Ring Picot is a nice edging stitch.

Ah, those sharp lines look like floor tiles in a bathroom!

Ha, they are NOT! Actually, the lines will be slightly softer.

Friday Homework for Lesson 299: Backstitched Trellis

Well, if you look at the date, you can see that this ought to be SATURDAY homework for lesson 299. The work was completed just before midnight but I had neither time nor energy to write up the post, thus the delay. Sorry!

Aida Sampler

The grid I made was very narrow, but it looks neat and tidy.

Sunday Stitch School Reference Chart

As this fabric has no grid, I drew the crosshatch pattern and stitched on top of the lines.

I quite like the trellis in two colours - it adds depth.

Mottled Wool Scribble Cloth

I knew this fabric was nearly impossible to mark. That is why I used waste canvas. However, the fabric is so knobbly that when the stitches are as short as these are, the whole grid looks wonky and uneven.

During work, I checked carefully that I had inserted the needle in the right hole, yet it looks as if I have made several mistakes. Sigh!

Back Stitch seen on the top of the work is one single stitch after another. On the back, however, you have what looks like Stem Stitch - the threads are double. This means that a narrow grid like this would be very hardwearing and suitable for Canvas Work on upholstery.

Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 299: Backstitched Trellis

Today we have an easy stitch - Backstitched Trellis. As the name implies, it is a cross grid of Back Stitch, done on the bias.

I found it in Sharon Boggon's Creative Stitches for Contemporary Embroidery.

Work it like this:

Think! Of all the wonderful things you can do with the empty squares in the grid, French Knots, beads, ribbon weaving, small Cross stitches... The Backstitched Trellis is a good base to play with.

Beware! It is, like all Back Stitch variations, a thread eater!
