Do you know Sharon Boggon? Her website Pintangle? Her Take A Stitch Tuesday online stitch course/challenge, TAST? Her online Stitch Dictionary? Her excellent book Creative Stitches?
Today's stitch, the Fringed Buttonhole Stitch, is one I found in the above book.
To make it you need a crochet hook.
Work it like this:
Make a line of Buttonhole Stitch
Cut strands of thread and use the crochet
hook to take them under and over the
stitch line to make a knotted tassel.
Pull tight (trim later)
If you take the looped thread
in the other direction, you get
another 'knot'.
Which knotted head do you like best?
Trim the threads to the desired length.
The one on the right has a tendency to lift itself
up from the fabric.

That is an interesting stitch. I do not immediately see an application for it but will try to keep it mind.
I do have the book, but I've not yet studied it in depth. Since this is the Year of Experiments, I should probably fix that...!

Yes I remember Sharon and doing TAST. I haven't got her book though, will have to check it out.
I've followed Sharon for - must be two decades now. I have her Visual guide to CQ designs. It's excellent. Today's stitch is very different and no doubt will encourage us to try different methods of how to attach things to stitches. I like both your versions of the stitch.
Interesting and beautiful stitch. I have started my regular embroidery journey and explored different stitches only after taking part in TAST in 2012. Thanks to sharon.
What an interesting technique, I've never seen anything like it!
I like the second knot better, and it's okay if it fluffs up from fabric. =)
