By placing a row of Fly Stitch next to each other, then mirroring them on the row below, you get a very pleasing filling stitch.

You're right it does make a nice filling stitch.
It almost looks like a crochet block (which would be a lot faster were I to try it.)
This is a great filling stitch and would also be nice along a seam.
