Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 191: Plaid Filling Stitch

It is time for another canvas stitch. This one goes by the name Plaid Filling Stitch and can be seen in Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches as well as at Sarah's Hand Embroidery Tutorials.

First make an even grid by weaving horizontal and vertical lines.

Then start filling in Straight Stitches horizontally over the foundation grid.

Alternate the lines so the stitches are staggered. Imagine you are building a brick wall.

Change direction and fill in with vertical stitches.

See what a beautiful checked pattern you get.

Homework:
Add to the usual samplers and also the Canvas sampler.

I'm sure I saw this stitch in Mary Thomas, but never tried it. It gives a very nice pattern.
