It was considerably easier to make this stitch as individual stitches than in a line, (#145 Roll Chain Stitch).
The tension is important though, especially for the start of the stitch. You need to keep the needle really flush with the fabric when you start winding the thread around the needle.

Scattering an area with Roll Straight Stitch of various tones is an alternative to using Seed Stitch for filling. Richer, livelier and with more 'movement'. Even headless shrimps are alive!
