Here is another way to play with the Chain Stitch and two threads. The stitch is called Overlaid Threaded Chain Stitch, and I learned it from Shami of My Craft Works. She has a tutorial here.
You make a Chain Stitch row and then
weave another thread through the loops as seen below:
It's easy-peasy and a good chance to use some difficult threads.

This is pretty with two colors and looks very even on the aida fabric.
I have tried a whipped chain but not this. It looks good!
I can see that that would make a very good way to deal with a particularly fragile but striking thread..
