Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 116: Woven Long Tail Chain Stitch

Welcome to another set of five stitches here at Sunday Stitch School.
Today I am once again taking a stitch from Totsuka Embroidery Stitch Book #8 (Detached Chain Stitch).

Actually it is not one stitch, but a combination made up of three Long Tail Chain stitches whose tails have been woven into a picot.

The stitch has no name in the book, so I will give it the descriptive name of Woven Long Tail Chain Stitch.

Begin by making a Long Tail Chain Stitch

 

Add another stitch at an angle.

Anchor the tail in the same hole as the previous tail.

 

Add another slanted stitch on the other side.

Now begin weaving  (keep the thread or change to another colour) between the tails.

Anchor at the tip.

Today's stitch is actually the Open Base Needlewoven Picot but made considerably longer. It is then rolled up into something like a 'Swiss Roll Cake'.

The first thing to do is to stretch 

the fabric tightly in a hoop or frame.

Use a long supporting pin.

Tighten the first two woven stitches as close to

head of the supporting pin as you can.

Pack the following stitches closely, too,

but try not to lose the cone shape of the

picot.

Anchor at the base of the picot

but don't cut the thread.

Remove the supporting pin.

The 'tongue' starts curling up by itself!

Use the pin to roll the picot

into a Swiss roll or Cinnamon bun.

Now take the thread up from the back,

and stitch down the edge around the picot.

Homework:

Add a batch of picots to these samplers.

Friday Homework for Lesson 364: Kashimiri Ball Stitch

I started writing this blog post with this sentence: 'This is an easy stitch, as we have already learned the Straight Stitch #317, Smyrna Stitch #94, and the Spid...'

Then I had to stop; the Spider's Web or the Woven Wheel, two names for a very basic stitch, have not been included yet in either my TAST or Sunday Stitch School's collection of stitches! I DID do the Woven Long Tail Chain #116, but the weaving is over a Chain Stitch, not a Straight Stitch.

And of course, I did it in the tutorial for Kashimiri Ball Stitch last Sunday.

Oh, I learn so much by collecting these stitches! I learn to see all the mistakes and misses I make!

The Spider's Web (aka Woven Wheel) will soon be added to the collection under its own name, but for now, it is used in today's homework of Kashimiri Ball Stitch.

Sunday Stitch School Stitch Sampler

The additions I made are #64 Madam Totsuka's Tasselled Chain Stitch (light blue) and #116 Woven Long Tail Chain Stitch (orange).

I am going to cut open some of the loops of #64 later, to make real tassels.

 

Sunday Stitch School - Revision: Stitches 116 - 120

Sorry there was a holiday last Sunday caused by the quilt show at Tokyo Dome.

116 Woven Long Tail Chain
This is such a great arrangement, and the variations are many. Play with length or thread.

117 French Knotted Lazy Daisy Stitch
A long name for a simple stitch!

118 Lazy Daisy Picot Stitch
Very similar in looks to the previous stitch, maybe a bit more untidy, though. The workings are totally different.

119 Alternating Magic Split Stitch
This stitch is not difficult at all, but looks impressive. The kind of stitch that gives instant satisfaction for very little input.

120 Magic Split Stitch
Even easier! Maybe not as impressive, though. Smart stitching, double value - two stitches for the price if one.

Homework: Figure out a way to use these stitches for a Sunbonnet Sue block.

Freeform Embroidery
Here we have a sprinkling of Twisted Satin Stitch, Woven Long Tail Chain Stitch and a line of Turkman Stitch.

Crazy for Crazy
I found the dark pink ribbon an eyesore - the colour was all wrong for this cq block.

So I removed it and  stitched a line of Herringbone instead. Then added the pink Turkish Knots, some green metallic stitches on the larger lace motif. The green lace bow was added and joined the pink one with a couched strand of metallic cord.
More work next week.

Log Cabin Challenge
A thin sheet of gauze was used to stabilise the flimsy from the back. Then four strips of fabric were added around the edges to protect the flimsy while it is being embroidered.
I also selected the thread, all stranded floss, for the embellishment and embroidery. Getting inspiration from TAST and Sunday Stitch Schools Reference Charts I will select a number of stitches to use. Watch this space!

I made 6 new blocks for the quilt, so the total number of blocks (including the 25 in the cushion)  now stands at 57.
