Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 303: Tacked Herringbone Stitch

Let Sarah's Hand Embroidery Tutorials teach us the Tacked Herringbone Stitch. It is a nice variation of one of the most basic stitches.

As you can understand you have to start

with a line of Herringbone Stitch.

As for the tacking, change to another

thread and add small upright crosses.

Method 1

Either you do the horizontal stitches first,

alternating upper and lower lines,

and the vertical lines on the return trip.

Method 2

Or you work a line of Running Stitch

first,

and then the upright stitches.

Method 3

Or you make each cross individually.

The final result looks the same whatever method

you use, but the Method 3 gives you the shortest

stitches on the back, and saves thread.

That looks like one that will fit into my October slice.

I love the look of the stitch, especially along a seam.

Much opportunity to rebalance the stitch by means of different thread and colour choice!

The tacked herringbone stitch is a classic and it's good to see 3 different versions for comparison and to know which version uses the least thread. Good tutorial!
