Friday Homework for Lesson 131: Interlaced Cross Stitch

I enjoyed doing my homework!

Aida Sampler
Working on Aida is easy as the holes are so clearly marked.

Sunday Stitch Reference Chart
The Looped Square, ⌘, is more prominent when it is worked in a darker colour than the foundation Herringbone Square.

Teal Wool Tailoring Scribble Cloth
On plain weave, this stitch is a little bit of a challenge - no guide lines, but I quite like the look of these anyway. I used two colours (red and white) for the Herringbone Square in one set of stitches.

WIPW - A Dorset Button

Work In Progress Wednesday:
Freeform Embroidery
Crazy for Crazy
Log Cabin Challenge
Extra: Dorset Button

Freeform Embroidery
Here we have: Raised Cup Stitch, Loopy Flower Stitch and Whipped Chain Stitch.

Crazy for Crazy
The support fabric is on, so I can safely put the block in a hoop.
A length of ribbon was ruched along one of the seams.

Log Cabin Challenge
9 new blocks were made, all in teal (no pinks).
Total number of blocks is now 46.

Dorset Button
Just for the fun of it, I made another Dorset button. It is worked around a pendant ring, so all I need is a chain or cord and this will become a necklace.

I get instructions and inspiration for these buttons from Elizabeth Healey's book 'Stitch, Fabric & Thread'.

Sunday Stitch School: Lesson 131 - Interlaced Cross Stitch

Are you ready for another set of new embroidery stitches?
Today we are dealing with #131, a combination stitch preferably worked in two kinds of thread.
It is called Interlaced Cross Stitch and is basically a Herringbone Square laced with that symbol seen on Apple computers' Command key - the looped square ⌘.
Incidentally this endless loop is also known as St John's Arms, Saint Hannes Cross, Gordon Loop and Bowden Knot, but now I am digressing.

In TAST (Take A Stitch Tuesday) I have learned Herringbone Square, and a laced version called Laced Square Herringbone. In the latter the lacing turns the square into a nice cross.

Now for the Interlaced Cross Stitch you also start with the Herringbone Square and then lace the square along the sides.

Like this:
Measure out the square.

Stitch the Herringbone

For the last part,
make the thread go over and
under the previous stitches.

Now change the thread and
begin the lacing in one corner.
Starting from the left,
go under
and over the green thread
according to the picture,
as if you were weaving.

Change the direction and
continue round the square.

Anchor in the hole the red thread
first came out, making the Looped Square
complete.

Unless I am mistaken this is also the basic stitch for Indian Kutchwork. Shami Immanuel of My Craft Works has made a series of very nice tutorials for Kutchwork, with excellent pictures, much better than mine. Do check them out.
Tutorial 1 Single Stitch (Interlaced Cross Stitch)
Tutorial 2 Two Stitches
Tutorial 3 Several Continuous Stitches

Homework:
A display of Interlaced Cross Stitch would be welcome on these samplers

Friday Revision Homework: Stitches 126 - 130

It was Linda at Linsartyblobs who suggested I used Sydd Tofs to depict Sunbonnet Sue as a cheerleader with pompoms. What a great idea! Thank you Linda.

Now what team is Sunbonnet Sue leading us to cheer for?
It is of course the universal team of people fighting the Corona Virus and its devastating impact on our lives and livelihood.

Let's root for

  • the heroic medical workers risking their own lives,
  • scientists and researchers trying to find a vaccin and a cure,
  • teachers, students or workers struggling to keep up with scheduled activities from home,
  • the masses of people who have suddenly become unemployed, and maybe evicted, too
  • those who have lost businesses,
  • world leaders trying to solve new and unpredictable problems,
  • lonely people struggling with isolation and depression,
  • medical workers and patients who are facing discrimination
  • families trying to keep peace in cramped homes,
  • victims of domestic violence,
  • all the people whose plans for surgery, weddings, holidays, exams... have been postponed
  • those masses who have lost loved ones...
  • and of course, all those patients who are fighting for their lives right now.
