The Making of a Lined/Reversible Envelope Cuhion Cover without any Raw Edges Showing

Some time ago, I made a cushion cover as a birthday gift. 

I also promised myself to make a tutorial to keep a record of the instructions, just in case I ever make another cover.

The finished cushion cover measures 45 cm x 45 cm. 

In total, six pieces of fabric were needed: 

Main fabric: One for the front (C) and two for the back, (A, B). I used blue cotton.

Lining/Reverse fabric: One for the front (3) and two for the back (1, 2). I used pink and green kimono silk.

As kimono silk is sold in rolls of approximately 36 cm x 1200 cm, it is too narrow for most cushions. I therefore added green panels on both sides of the pink patterned piece.

Step 1: Back

The back of the cushion, the envelope opening, is made up of two identical panels (A, 1) and (B, 2).

The right sides of one blue (A) and one pink/green piece (1) were pinned and stitched together.

The seam was pressed open.

Then topstitched

I used pink thread in the needle for the pink silk and blue thread in the bobbin for the blue cotton.

Step 2: 

Repeat Step 1 for the remaining two back pieces (B, 2).

Step 3: 

Place the blue panel with white lace ornaments (C), right side up.

On top of that, place the panel made in Step 1 (A, 1), so that the blue sides are facing each other.

Align the hems at the bottom.

Step 4: 

On top of that, add the remaining panel from Step 2, (B, 2)  right side down.

Align the hems at the top.

The two back pieces for the envelope opening now overlap each other.

Step 4:

On top of that, place the large pink and green silk panel (3) right side down, so the patterned sides are facing each other.

You now have a sandwich of four layers at each corner.

Pin around all the edges.

Step 5:

Stitch all around, except for an opening at the bottom.

Then fortify the corners with a double seam.

Snip off excess fabric at the corners.

Step 6:

Fold down one layer of the opening of the pink silk and baste 

Repeat the procedure for the opening of the blue cotton and baste.

You now have two basted openings.

Step 7:

Insert your hand into the sandwich and pull out the right sides of the blue cotton.

Stitch the opening together by hand.

Step 8: Pull out the right sides of the pink silk and stitch the opening closed.

 

Step 9: 

Insert a cushion into the blue cotton cover.

Front.

Back.

Step 10:

To display the pink kimono silk side, remove the cushion. 

Turn the cover inside out and insert the cushion again.
