Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 373: Surface Darning Stitch

The Royal School of Needlework has a grand collection of stitches on its Stitch Wall.

Today I want to try the Surface Darning Stitch. It gives you an attractive woven piece of work and can be used for decorative purposes or as a smart way to cover a tear, a stain or other blemish on a garment. SDG's darning!

#373 Surface Darning Stitch is sustainable in another way, too - as it is a surface stitch, almost no thread is used on the back.

Work it like this:

Two pieces of advice:

1) use Aida or another fabric where there is a clear grid

2) stretch the fabric in a hoop or frame

and a suggestion:

1) RSN used the same colour for weft and warp threads; why not use two, like I did, or even more. You could make a beautiful checked darning.

Let's see on Friday what kind of

Homework

Queenie will hand in, as she works these samplers.
