Alternating Cross Stitch is the name of a crossed canvas stitch where every other Cross Stitch is taller than the ones next to it.
In Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches, as well as in RSN's Stitch Bank, this stitch is also known as Double Stitch.
It's easy, as you can see in my photo tutorial. I used several colours for clarity, but you can, of course, use the same colour for every stitch.
Then, stack the next row of stitches.
When worked in only one colour, this is the result. Which do you like better?
Homework:
Add to the three usual samplers.

Your long and short stitch is beautiful.
This is a good stitch with dimension. The variations would be useful for different looks. I think it would look great to have the smaller cross stitches in one color and the taller cross stitches in a second color.
That is an attractive stitch!
Alternating Cross Stitch is very beautiful, excellent border or filler.
It makes a really nice, subtle texture if you do it in a single colour/thread.
