Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 308: Crossed Cretan Stitch

Are you ready for a tricky stitch? I first found Crossed Cretan Stitch at Sarah's Hand Embroidery Tutorials and then on YouTube at Royal Embroideries. Do have a look.

I must admit that this stitch does not look like a Cretan Stitch (see below) at all, but rather a crowned Herringbone Stitch (as seen in the video).

Anyway, here is my photo tutorial.

Start with the first part of the Cretan Stitch.

Then take a diagonal stitch, but leave a small space open.

Take a horizontal Back Stitch and come out where the open space was.

Here you can see the four spikes of a crown, or is it a rooster's comb?

Repeat the procedure for the lower part of the stitch,

and make sure to place the thread under the needle.

Go on.

It's a rather unusual stitch, don't you agree?

Almost a "Crown of Thorns", in fact...

I like the Crossed Cretan Stitch I think it looks like a rooster's comb too, a bit flamboyant.
And your 'flaming, smoldering' reds look gorgeous they're all different but work well together.
The new stitches on your sampler are exciting and look to me to be ancient hyroglyphics.

It looks like a tricky little stitch, but your instructions are clear.

Is this a traditional stitch?
Or is it an evolution of an old stitch?
