Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 308: Crossed Cretan Stitch

Are you ready for a tricky stitch? I first found Crossed Cretan Stitch at Sarah's Hand Embroidery Tutorials and then on YouTube at Royal Embroideries. Do have a look.


I must admit that this stitch does not look like a Cretan Stitch (see below) at all, but rather a crowned Herringbone Stitch (as seen in the video).


Anyway, here is my photo tutorial.

Start with the first part of the Cretan Stitch.



Then take a diagonal stitch, but leave a small space open.


Take a horizontal Back Stitch and come out where the open space was.

Here you can see the four spikes of a crown, or is it a rooster's comb?

Repeat the procedure for the lower part of the stitch,

and make sure to place the thread under the needle.




Go on.



It's a rather unusual stitch, don't you agree?
