13th Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2014
On Thursday January 23rd, the 13th Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival will open at Tokyo Dome. I will report from the event and hope to share a lot of great quilts.
This is what the Japanese programme flyer looks like:
Every year a well-known Japanese quilter/teacher makes the quilt on the front. This year it is Yoko Saito who has made the charming Moomin quilt. Tove Jansson, the author of the children's books about Moomin and his mystic world, was born 100 years ago. Mooming is very popular in Japan and Yoko Saito has over 50 pieces of Moomin quilting in the show!
As a piece of side info, there is actually a Moomin bakery and cafe in the Tokyo Dome City complex. You can read about it

Other items of interest at the quilt show are:
- The quilt contest with stunning quilts, of course
- Lots of traders
- The works of 60 famous (Japanese) quilters
- Shizuko Kuroha on what textile has taught her. She is famous for her beautiful blue quilts; you can see her quilting in the picture above.
- Five famous quilters share how they 'play with fabric'.
- The Partnership charity quilts (The Language of Flowers)
- Swedish Antique Wool Embroidery
I have had a bit of a hand in the Swedish Wool Embroidery being on show in Tokyo and feel so happy that these eight pieces could be on loan. Many thanks to
Kulturen in Lund, the staff at the Swedish embassy in Tokyo and especially to Ms Miyako Hara and her staff at NHK.
If you have contributed to the Partnership quilt project it is likely that you have been sent a postcard like this. The number at the top indicates the quilt into which your block has been worked. I will be looking out for quilt #28!
The circled numbers at the bottom right corner mean that you are entitled to buy entry tickets at the reduced price of 1800 yen. Two tickets for each circle = four tickets.

The poster is wonderful,looks and sounds like it will be a great show Queenie, when you get the details for the charity blocks let me know and I will try and do one for next year, I expect you will be sharing some photos with us, looking froward to them

What detail Carin, I feel excited, almost as if I was actually going to the show. When I see your posts I will feel I have been. Good luck with spotting your quilt, 28, and also Pamela's. I bet you are going to have a wonderful time, in spite of the crowds. Love the idea of the Moomin cafe.
The flyer looks great as I'm sure the rest of the show will be, looking forward to seeing and learning more.

At least you have been to Japan and know what they are capable of in the way of organisation! The Moomin cafe is usually very crowded but they serve good quiche and a delicious creamy salmon soup.
Unfortunately they no longer produce flyers or floor plans in English; a great shame when you put 'international' in the title! The governments target is to double the number of foreign visitors to Japan and NHK should take this to heart!
Hooray! it is that time of year - I too am so excited to join in with your presentation of the festival! feels like I am attending too :) some day...perhaps in person!
I had so wanted to get to Toyoko for this show but have to teach. Lots of people are flying up from Brisbane, as they do every time the show is on. I look forward to seeing your photos.
I hope in future there will be a lot of promotion for foreign visitors so that more can enjoy the show in person. I hope to give a report that makes you feel as if you are there.
I would have loved to meet you at the show, Carolyn. There are usually several groups of Americans or Australians on quilting tours, a handful of lone travellers and then a sprinkling of foreign residents. 99% of the visitors are Japanese, and maybe that is why there is so little info in English...
The quilt on the flyer looks very interesting.
