Here I used thick wool yarn for the weft, and it gives a very different look.

The only way I would do that stitch is with a thicker yarn. Otherwise I think I would find it rather tedious.
Another occasion for a very blunt, but quite long, needle!
The name of this stitch makes me think it should be like hair.
It looks like it was woven on a loom. I feel it is important to keep the force even.
