17th Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2018, Part 2

It is Sunday today, but instead of learning stitches at Sunday Stitch School, we'll go on a field trip to Tokyo Dome and see more things from the 17th Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2018.

Today I joined forces with Pamela (of Hokkaido Kudasai). The first thing we did was go to see her block in the Partnership quilt project. Pamela seems mesmerized by hexagons and also this year she used that shape to build her tree + of course, embroidery!

This tree gives us so much of Life's necessities, coffee cups, dragon flies, carrots and peas, hearts, bees, leaves and flowers....

Also check out Pamela's crazy quilt bag - a sure crowd stopper.

Here are some other Partnership blocks that caught our eye.

This Tree of Life is shaped like a heart - most appropriate!

Life can go up or down in spirals.

Life can be simple or hard with sharp tops.

Life can be fun with friends.

Life can give us wisdom from an owl.

Is Sunbonnet Sue harvesting apples from the Tree of Knowledge?

Is this William Morris' The Cherry Thief?

These cherry trees live to dry the laundry.

This boy could spend all his life swinging from the tree.

New life will hatch in this pink birdhouse.

These two pictures show us the real Tree of Life, the Miracle Pine, the one single tree that survived while the other 70.000 pines in the same wood were washed away by the tsunami of 2011. Read more about its story here.

 .....................
Now let's look at books and quilts.
This year quilts from Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women' had inspired the organizers to build a replica house and garden.

and furnish it with quilts.

 Quilting team: Reiko Washizawa*鷲澤玲子/Kathy Nakajima*キャシー中島/Suzuko Koseki*小関鈴子/Yoko Saito*斎藤謠子

Some illustrations from the book were made into pictorial quilts.
You can see a small picture of the frontispiece of this classic novel below the quilt.

Then a modern quilt of 'Little Women' had been made in the manga style!

 Quilt by Pachiko Yoshida*吉田波知子

..................

In another section of the quilt show, picture books by Eric Carle were displayed both in the original paintings (watercolor?) and replica quilts.

Quilt by Akiko Fukui *福井暁子

 Quilt by Miki Goki *五木美規

Quilt by Kanako Hamamoto*濱本加奈子

Another report will be published tomorrow.

Many thanks for posting 1 and 2 on the Quilt Festival. I wonder what the theme for the Partnership quilt blocks will be for 2019. Looking forward to some more photos. Looks like you all had a great time.

Thank you for you kind comment.
There is PLENTY more to see, so return for future blog posts please.
The show is very crowded, but it is worth seeing the quilts in person as the craftsmanship often is fabulous.

They have previously focused on The Wizard of Oz and The Little House on the Prairie.
I wonder what book they will 'quilt' next year!

Yes, isn't he a charmer?

Thank you for your information. All his pictures are charming and have that beautiful softness about them.

Hi Jenni
We tried to find out what's in stall for next year but the staff did not tell. We will have to wait until late spring, May maybe, before we know. I will try to keep an ear out for news.

Thank you for sharing all the beautiful pics of the Quilt Show! Such beauty and originality. Is there a way to google and get more views, especially of the cat and Little Women quilts? Also, would love to see previous years' Oz and Little House on the Prairie quilts. Odd, but these are 3 of my favorite books, growing up--have these books been translated into Japanese? I would guess that next year or soon the subject might be L. M. Montgomery; my friend from Japan cannot get enough of the books/specials.
Finally, could you tell me where the tortoise frame glasses can be purchased? The light blond styles are hard to locate. Again, continued thank you for your appealing blog!

Thank you!

There was not as much variety as it usually is. I tried to pick out interesting blocks. It is fun to stand in from of these 60 quilts and look at the details.

You're welcome!!!

Love the blocks - the imagination of the designers is wonderful. Planning to head to Tokyo Show in 2019. Are there classes available at the show and if so, when will they be announced? Thanks for sharing.

This is the latest information, unfortunately it is all in Japanese. The English website will probably be posted later.
