Help! Please!

Help!

Please, I need your help to identify this stitch.
Have you seen it before?
Have you worked it?
Do you know its name?

As you can see it looks like the Stem Stitch, but it is worked like a staggered Back Stitch.

The difference is most obvious on the back.

A friend of mine showed me this stitch. It was taught to her in school in the South of England. Her needlework teacher was a skilled court dressmaker.

Is this a dressmaking stitch rather than one for embroidery? If you have any information, please let me know.

I have seen it demonstrated as stem stitch, it made me question whether my way of stem stitch was wrong.

I've only ever seen it called stem stitch, too.

I can't say I've ever seen it before. It looks quite interesting, though is perhaps s bit bulky given the reverse of your fabric. Good luck hunting! Kylie does sound correct and maybe it is a variation of stem stitch

Maybe a variation? I agree it does look bulky on the back.

Thank you for your input. On the top the ?stitch and Stem stitch are interchangeable; you see the difference on the back. Of course there is also the personal preference of stitching backwards or forwards...

So you HAVE seen it? Were you taught it in school or from a book?

The resulting look is the same, but the direction the stitches are worked is different. Some stitchers like to stitch towards themselves, and other want to have a back stitch movement.
My friend stitches more neatly than me so her back is not as bulky, but the stitches are overlapping and splitting so, yes bulkier than the straight 'Back Stitch' back of the traditional Stem Stitch.

It must be, but was was it stitched in this way?

I asked google to help using all possible names I could think of. But no use.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to check. Yes, it is hard to identify some stitches and put a name to them.

It looks like a stem stitch variation. Sometimes the backside of my stemstitch looks as messy as your sample when I work on a curved stem stitch!

I looked up my embroidery book, stem stitch variation. Whatever the name. like the stitch.

The lady who taught me this stitch is a Back Stitch expert and her stitch line on the back is always a neat split stitch type. I just can't make them that neat.

Did yo actually find it in the book?! Can you give me the title of the book, please?
Yes, it is a nice stitch, and for those who love Back Stitch, very easy to do.
