NHK Partnership quilt for 2016

Finally I have managed to complete the block I will be contributing to the NHK's Partnership Quilt project for the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2016 in January next year. As you might remember the deadline is August 31st. Read more about it here.

The theme is MUSIC and I thought the key harp, so important in Nordic folk music, would be a good way to add a bit of Swedish flavour to a quilt.
Instead of making the fiddly little flag I usually include, I pieced the background in the national colours of Sweden.

I can guarantee that my key harp has many flaws and is a totally unplayable instrument, but it was fun to make!

Your completed block is great! Making a block has been on my "to do" list for ages, but so far I haven't come up with an idea having to do with music. I'll have to think a little harder because time is getting short!

Good job. It will be fun to look for. Did you hear Tanya's was rejected? I can't believe they actually would do that.

It lookd great and I love your stitching of the shoulder strap.

Ha! The shoulder strap is a striped ribbon which I simply stitched down with Herringbone stitch! Easy peasy!

Yes, I heard the disappointing news of Tanya's block. As the quilts will be hand quilted I guess they can not accept any stabilizer...

Ha, ha! Are you tone deaf, Margaret? I am sure the 'music' from this harp is muffled by the fabric, however much the print is 'wood'!

Will you have a chance to visit the show next year? If so, then you just will HAVE TO make a block!
How about an Ainu instrument? Google TONKORI and see what you think.

Nice work, Queenie, I like your ideas.

Thank you, Susan. Well, I just HAD TO add a wee bit of embroidery, hadn't I?

Thank you for your kind words.
I guess there will be LOTS of musical instruments, but maybe not too many Swedish key harps!

An instrument is an easy way out! I am looking forward to what ideas and interpretations others have on the theme MUSIC; vinyl records, music notes, earphones, famous composers or rock stars....

I like your entry. What a good idea for the ribbon. The stitched ribbon appears like a braid. Clever ideas you have. The national colours give a good background for the key harp.

As always, Maureen, you are both kind and observant.

Oh, I can hear the stitching music of your key harp - and I like the thoughtful background of course, too.

Your block is beautiful .I especially like the shoulder strap

The background was the lazy (time saving) way to add the Swedish flag!

The ribbon used for the shoulder strap is in three shades of blue. After I had embroidered the text with red thread I thought I needed to balance the shoulder strap with some red, and the Herringbone stitch was an easy way to do that.

Congratulations on a beautiful finish! I am still wondering if I'm going to try to get another block in the mail after the first return... I can't come up with any other ideas though!
