WIPW - Kafferepet Completed

Work In Progress Wednesday, that was started by Sharon Boggon of Pintangle, has been a great way to spur us on, to work towards completing needlework projects that have been taken too long, or even taken up long term residence 'on the shelf'.

For me, one such project was a wallhanging called Kafferepet. I made the first block in the summer of 2007!, and with the help of Sharon's WIPW I have now reached the goal and the quilt is completed!

I have made progress on other projects, too, but let's start with:

Kafferepet
It all began in 2007 when I made a block for NHK's Partnership charity quilt project. The theme was 'Tea Time', and I made a platter of seven 'goodies' usually served at a traditional, and slightly old fashioned, Swedish coffee gathering, known as Kafferep in Swedish.
Kanelbulle, Schackruta, Vaniljhjärta, Uppåkrakaka, Chokladsnitt, Gaffelkaka, Syltgrotta are the names... (For NHK's Partnership Quilt Project 2008)

Once the block had been donated to NHK I knew I wanted one for myself and made a new one.
The cinnamon roll was replaced with a biscuit called Kongress.
As I love the china that the biscuits are on, I decided to make a small quilt featuring the cup and coffee pot as well.
From there the project grew with blocks of buns, cup cakes,
raspberry cordial, spoons and all the other things connected with this kind of coffee party.

From the ladies of my family I had been given lots of hand made lace that I used for the sashing. I backed the lace with blue and yellow fabric, the colours of the Swedish flag.
The quilt was extended with a border of appliquéd summer flowers.
By the time I had joined TAST (Take A Stitch Tuesday) in 2012, I started embroidering stems by using 48 different TAST stitches.

Another border, with bobbin lace held down with other TAST stitches, completed the top.

Now in the last week I have worked on the back; the hanging sleeve was stitched on and the label completed.
Lace, appliqué and TAST stitches, all in celebration of Swedish coffee culture.

The front looks like this:
(measuring 100x105 cm)
and here are some details of the quilting

As can be seen, all quilting is done with embroidery stitches.

To celebrate the completion I just had to arrange a Kafferep and set the table.
'Coffee is served!'

TASTy Beads Galore
This week I used TAST #107 Beaded Loop Cretan

Pile 'em On
Apart from adding some more stray stitches and the speared orts, technique here, I began on some pulled work outside the circle.

New Growing Red
Here are the goods for my next project, red wool en mass, fabric and yarn.

Wishing those who celebrate Christmas a Jolly Holiday, and wishing you all, Jolly Stitching!

Wow! A truly beautiful quilt, filled with inspiring stitching, colour and a theme of coffee and cakes.from Sweden.
The pot with your own coffeepot design makes it so personal. Your quilt must be unique to have, not machine stitching but an exhibition of TAST stitches to tie it down.

The border is gorgeous.. A true labour of love and well worth the time taken.
Many of us have enjoyed the travel with you.

Merry Christmas to you also.

Congrats on your quilt completion. never would have thought it would be filled with so many interesting details. Thanks for sharing them. the pulled thread looks lovely. looking forward to this and your new project.
Merry Christmas!

Thank you, Chitra.
What I like about this quilt is that it HAS all these details, and that I had to share the information with the quilting world. However, it took a long time to complete and I want to have some quicker projects in future.

There are not many machine stitches on Kafferepet; I so prefer hand stitching, but it has taken time. Drawing the original pattern of the real china onto fabric was fun but also took time.
Now I want to work with wool for a bit and dug out the reds from my stash.

Thank you Chris. I am glad this quilt can be ticked off the list and I can start on something new again.

If it hadn't been for Sharon's WIPW all three projects might still be unfinished. With the support of all my online friends I have been able to complete them and plan for new projects.
The red wool has a Japanese meaning...
Keep warm and cheerful at Christmas. I've got some choir music and the Advent star to enhance the mood.

Congrats on finishing your Kafferepet, I enjoyed watching the weekly progress. The result is just gorgeous! I’m looking forward to see your new red project too. And the pulled thread is a great contrast to your rough embroidery.
Merry Christmas!

Congratulations on finishing your quilt, it looks amazing. I love the coffee pot and your interpretation of it.
Jolly Holidays!

Thank you, Annet, for words of praise. It has been so much easier to complete this quilt than others thanks to the weekly routine with WIPW and the encouragement from all blogreaders.
Remember that it was YOU who inspired me to add pulled work. The fabric is not even enough for an even result but I'll do more pulled work.

Thanks, Linda.
The coffee pot is so charmingly decorated - several shapes of flowers and leaves grow from the same stem - a designer's dream of interpreting nature!
Season's Greetings to you, too.

Oh waht a beautiful quilt! The lace just sets it off and brings that bit extra to the finished item. This will be a heirloom piece. You must make sure you keep a copy of it's story to pass on as well because it is a story in stitch. Congratulations.

Thank you Kippy!
It was a long 'party' completing this quilt but with many cups of coffee, a lot of supportive chatter from my friends and the WIPW carrot, it's completed,

THANK YOU, Carolyn. I value your professional opinion more than anything and will make sure to keep a record of the progress of this quilt. Have a great holiday on the Christmas beach!

Queenie, wonderful. We could see now the complete and whole quilt which we all accompanied during months in parts. I like it very much. And a red mystery is coming up!

Thanks Anita, it feels good to have TWO projects off the WIP list.
Wishing you, too, a great year 2015.

Many thanks Anneliese, it has been fun to have had your 'company' while working on Kafferepet. I hope to keep you in suspense about the red mystery!!!!

Your wonderful Kafferepet wallhanging looks absolutely beautiful and it's great to see how the whole piece finally looks after all this time. Congratulations on this creative and fabulously stitched finish. Love your Pile em on too!

I absolutely LOVE it! Your work and imagination have created such a wonderful keepsake! Beautiful!

I hope you have a wonderful new year!

Queeniepatch said...

Thank you Jenny for your kind words. It was fun to make this quilt as it is 100% my own work (ie not a kit or magazine pattern), but it took time!
Pile 'em On will take time, too!

Queeniepatch said...

He Renee! I am so glad you like the quilt, it was an interesting quilt journey for me although a long one!
Have a wonderful new year, too, and work on shortening your lists!

Queenie--Congratulations on completion of the Kafferepet quilt. It is truly stunning. The outer borders--flowers and lace, set off all your beautiful work on the interior blocks. It has been fun to watch this come together through your sharing each week.
Looking forward to seeing your work in the new year.

Queeniepatch said...

Thanks Pat,
I am very happy to hear what you say about the borders and the blocks looking good together. Instead of planning the whole quilt beforehand it has developed and the quilt grown as I progressed.
I hope you have a great and creative 2015.

Nice to hear from you. I have to check out your new blog.
As for my quilt, it will be entered into the contest at FOQ in Birmingham next summer.
Have a great new year!

Congratulations on finishing Kafferepet, it looks stunning especially in the overhead photo–the colours are beautiful. Are you going to enter it for a competition, or is it for personal use/display in the home? I imagine that although you're probably hugely relieved to have finished the project, there might also be a part of you that will miss working on it?

Queeniepatch said...

Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for your kind words.
Yes, I am going to enter it into FOQ at Birmingham in August 2015, just for the fun of seeing it in public! For the rest of the time it will be in display at my home, especially if I have a real Kafferep party and 'serve up the works' in the original china.
At the final stages of this quilt my fingers were longing to work with wool, or silk, or velvet... so no I am pleased that I can now take a break from the all cotton quilt. Soon enough I will want to work with cotton again!
Have a great and creative 2015.

Congratulations on another fantastic quilt, I am sure that it will do well for you in the show.

Queeniepatch said...

Thank you!
It doesn't need to 'do well' at the show; I just want to see it once in display at a big event!
