Here is a new tip for what to do with short orts.
If you have a spare key ring like the one in the photo, and snippets of thread,
trap the orts between the springs,
then fasten the orts to the fabric with a stitch. I used Back Stitch, then covered the remaining metal ring with Buttonhole Stitch.
If you give it a try, I hope you'll have as much fun as I did.

such imagination you have Quieenie to come up with this for the orts it works so well who would believe you could do so much with these left over threads
Great use for all those small leftover threads!
My orts aren't that colorful but maybe the birds won't mind come spring.
A cute idea -
This has become a private challenge! I'll see if I can come up with more ideas - just for fun!
This was just for fun! Normally wouldn't we all toss such short orts away?
You are so kind, 'St Francis of Assisi'!
This is great for Sumptuous Surface Embroidery, don't you think?
Such a great idea, thanks for sharing!
What a good idea!!
Clever idea. It would make an unusual key ring too if it was used as one.
Cute, clever idea. This method would make a good octopus. Keep having fun Queenie it entertains your followers too.
Ha, ha! I'll do my best to entertain you! Actually I thought this would make a nice meteorite falling through the universe.
You're welcome!
I'm glad you think so.
Yes... well I then suggest that you use a bit of glue to fix the threads securely to the ring, and then you can not get the key off the ring or add another one...
You've trapped some orts and turned them into beautiful decorative objects, I am amazed.
Thats great idea!! i am going to try..Thanks Queenie..
What a fun idea Queenie, I could visualise a nice big gem or pearl placed inside the ring for effect, too !

Brilliant!
Thank you, Janie. It was fun thinking up this combination of orts and a simple key ring.
Hello Lakshmi,
Isn't it fun to use up stray objects? Sharon Boggon of Pintangle and many others add washers or odd items to their free form and dimensional embroidery. Give it a try and have fun!
Good thinking, Chris. I had the beads box out the other day, why didn't I think of digging out a big gem. Actually I can do it right now! Thanks for your great idea!
Excellent idea to create an artistic and creatve embroidery design. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome.......Have a lovely week Queenie xx
I did find a nice 'jewel' to put in the centre, but will do the actual work once the piece is nearing completion. Right now it would be in the way of the hoop.
At the quilt show in Yokohama last year I saw a fabric art designer who had added pieces of wood to her work, so why not some metal 'junk'!?
It certainly would do that.
