WIPW - You are so good!

You are all so good at answering correctly to my quizzes! Yes, it is indeed a horse! What I showed last week was the first stitches on the ear:

Swedish Cushion
In traditional Swedish embroidery, especially wool embroidery, birds or animals are often featured. As this year, 2014, is the year of the horse in the Japanese zodiac I wanted to add a horse (to include my Japanese connections). What better horse to add than a 'Dalahäst', a Dalecarlian horse, one of the most famous symbols of Sweden.

I have used a variety of stitches:
TAST #8 Chain Stitch for the body
#111 Zig-zag Coral Stitch (blue)
# 89 Twisted Satin Stitch (yellow)
Surface Long and Short Stitch (green)
#55 Buttonholed Herringbone (green)
# 28 Oyster Stitch (yellow)
#5 Herringbone Stitch (green)
#3 Feather Stitch (blue)
#4 Cretan (yellow)
# 14 Stem Stitch (white)
Straight Stitch (black)

I love your horse, he's so sweet! He (or she?) looks as if he was a joy to sew too.

Your horse is wonderful, I love the colors.

Thank you, Carolyn. It was great fun to figure out what stitches to use.

Sorry, there is nothing to suggest what gender the horse is! He/she was indeed a joy to stitch.

Thank you. The design is very traditional, but it was enjoyable to search among the TAST stitches for ones that would fit the pattern.

I am glad I was able to add this image to the cushion, and find stitches to recreate the pattern.

By chance I had the coppery red, DMC Stranded floss #350, in my stash, and then looked for the other primary colours that are usually used. It would have been fun though to add lime green or purple!

Ah, yes! A fine horse. How very appropriate for this year and a stitching queen!

You know all about wood carving and would love one of these traditional horses. Maybe I can challenge you to whittle one!!!

Thank you! I just love the colours!

Thanks. It was fun to produce a picture on this embroidery. Everything else is just patterns.

Queeniepatch said...

Thanks Annet. It was great fun to stitch and especially to add the TAST stitches.

Thank you. The orignal horse is a great toy for children and can also be found as a decoration in most Swedish homes.

Thank, Shami. The outline design of the horse is so simple and I think any TAST stitches could be used, and altered a bit, to fit the pattern.

Thank you Chitra, I like the colours, too.

The Chain stitch seems to be a traditional filling stitch in Swedish embroidery

Queeniepatch said...

Thanks, Yes, too, I love the design of these traditionally painted wooden horses. It was fun to do it in thread!

Your horse looks so good ! lovely colors and beautiful stitching.Twisted satin stitch has come out so well and it fills the space perfectly.Well done!

Queeniepatch said...

Thank you for your kind words, Anita.
When using the TAST stitches on a project where there is a curved line you have to chose the ones that can be adjusted to follow the curve. With the Twisted Satin stitch there were no problems.

Thank you for your kind comments. The horse was fun to make, and not that time consuming either!

Your horse looks super and the chain stitch was an excellent choice for the body. Really nice use of the oyster stitch too and well, just all of them!
