Mola
The original and traditional Molas made by the Cuna Indians of Panama are sometimes, but not always, adorned with some embroidery, usually the most basic stitches.
My friend Julie of My Quilt Diary has an original Mola panel and says the Chain Stitches on it are so tiny there are eight stitches on a cm.
I have also used some of the basic stitches - Running, Chain, Fly and Herringbone.
Instead of a single strand of cotton floss, though, I used perle #8 and made bolder stitches.
Mola - Snippets of Interest
The word Mola originally means bird plumage.

Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteVery nice embroidery on Mola quilt. The stitches match with the back ground work so well. Fantastic work!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI thought the block needed some embroidery to add a new dimension.
This is fabulous! Very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOh !! Carin, your Mola panel has turned very nice !! Congratulations !!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYes, embroidery can make a lot of change.
Just enough to bring it to life!
ReplyDeleteAs you know, with embroidery it is hard to know when to stop! I am glad I did when I did!
DeleteMaybe I should have tried the pearl cotton. As I am used to making tiny stitches, it was rather hard to get bigger ones. Not sure how well they show up.
ReplyDeletePerle is a favourite thread of mine. Sometimes a quilt, or waistcoat, has too large an area to fill with stranded cotton embroidery thread.
DeleteI agree, it is difficult to take small stitches with perle.
it looks fantastic, I didn't realise you were going to embroider it too
ReplyDeleteThe really exquisite Molas are not embroidered, but I think a few stitches here and there can add a new dimension to almost any quilt.
DeleteBeautiful embroidery, it adds great detail and emphasis.
ReplyDeleteSuper!
It is looking lovely and will make a splendid bag. Perle is a favourite thread of mine too.
ReplyDeleteThe black fabric frayed badly so the slits are not very steady. I won't use the bag as a bag more than once (to show my friends). After that it will be fed a cushion and put to sleep on my Trinity Green quilt!
DeleteYour addition of stitches have completed this wonderful Mola. Congratulations on such lovely artwork.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt you will receive lots of compliments when using your bag.
Thank you.
DeleteI think my friend Julie will be the crowd stopper when we visit the quilt show and she is wearing her Mola waist coat!
I didn't think you could cut so many openings. It looks great.
ReplyDeleteIf the fabric had been more tightly woven and not frayed so much I would have been able to make more slits.
DeleteWell done!!!
ReplyDeleteShow and Tell on Saturday, eh!
DeleteThose stitches are the icing on the cake, pretty!
ReplyDeleteThey actually remind me of hard sugar crystals that are used to decorate Swedish buns and cakes.
