WIPW - Mola Holiday?

For some reason life has told me to work and not play this week. So there is not much progress to report on my Work this Wednesday. I worked, and Mola took a holiday.

Mola - Snippets of Interest

 Molas are made to be worn, (as you know they form the panel part of the blouse worn by Cuna Indian women of San Blas Islands in Central America) so there are not many 'antique' molas to be found. The oldest Molas were made 150 - 170 years ago.

Some Molas have embroidery to enhance the design, but the really valuable ones are made in reverse appliqué only, have more than five layers and near invisible stitches.

      I agree, batik is nice for Mola and the colours are nice!

    The Mola is coming along beautifully. Lovely colours and interesting shapes popping up. I imagine the progress to be slow knowing the concentration needed to turn and finely stitch the small raw edges. Well done, Queenie.

      The sewing is not the problem, it is knowing WHERE to cut and turn, and especially how to ADD pieces...

    I've only done a mola sample once and I left the edges raw. It looks a lot more time consuming stitching them properly.

      For me most of the time is sitting and staring at it, wondering what to do. If I hadn't promised my friends to show up at the quilt festival with a Mola bag I might just toss the project. Now I feel I have to go on, but am still puzzled about the technique.

    Well, my mola has been on hold while the banner got attention. I think I hear it calling from under the piles of fabric.

    Oh, Queenie! A Mola bag will look fabulous!
    I’m making myself a name badge ..... only small, now I’m wondering if I can turn it into a Mola piece. Only an experiment, of course, but you’ve got me thinking!

      It might be too fiddly a technique for such a small item as a name badge. Give it a try if you want, but I think it would be better for a larger design.
