Spear the Spare Orts

What to do with orts (small snippets of thread you usually throw away) has become a fun project for me.
How about spearing the spare orts to spare the planet; a smart way of sparing yourself the trouble of tossing the orts away, not going spare by your untidy sewing area and enjoying thread play in your spare time?


1. Collect your orts. Thread a needle with a longish thread and make a sturdy knot.
2. Spear the orts onto your needle
 3. until you have a good number of orts on the needle

 4. Fix the speared orts to the fabric with a suitable stitch. I used Chain Stitch.

    you certainly are coming up with lots of ideas I personally like this one best so far. I tend to put my cotton ones in the composter in the garden as trying to make my own compost, also but paper etc in as well as veg peelings.

      At least it must be the easiest technique to do!
      A lot of food in Japan is cooked on skewers and that is where the idea came from. Grilled thread, how's that for dinner? No, I'd rather put them in the composter than eat them, ha, ha!

      When I read Annet's comment I got thinking of the stumpwork portraits and see this is a much better way to secure hair instead of bundling up chunks of thread and stitching. I, too, am keen now to play!

    I like this idea of securing the orts. I only usually save the longer orts but perhaps I should start saving the shorter ones too.

      Someone saved short ends in a huge glass jar - it became an ornamental object. That is a good way of keeping orts until an idea comes up.
