Work In Progress Wednesday - A Dark Border

With no TAST stitches to work during the holiday I have been spending time and energy on the borders of my crazy quilt block instead.
I hope some others have made WIPW progress, too, and posted them at Sharon's. Go and have a look.


A dip into my stash of batik resulted in finding this sombre fabric. I wanted to keep the dark look, so as to get a good contrast to the sparkling, crusty centre. My choice was therefore to do the embroidery stitches only in dull shades of deep purple, dark grey and and black.
First, though, there is a trim in black and silver. The stitches that follow are from the centre and outward:
Half Chevron,
Detached Chain in purple laced with black,
Feather,
Knotted Buttonhole (as taught in TAST, there IS another more traditional version)
and finally Alternating Barred Chain.
On the corner I worked a Buttonhole Eyelet Flower.

      I'm curious, too!
      I will need to add another strip of fabric to reach the desired size for the Yokohama contest, then add some more stitches and see what my instinct tells me to do with the corners. Watch this space!

      Thanks. I am always so impressed by your work where there is a lot of structure. On the next part of the border (the edge) I will try to use lace, ribbon or something to add a bit bulk, but keeping it in the same range of colour.

    I am very impressed with how much texture and contrast the stitches produce given how dark and how similar the colours of fabric and threads, very effective.

      Maybe it is because it is a close-up photo!
      I hope that seen from a distance, and with a spotlight on it, the centre block will shine and the dark border just gleam a little - like a multicoloured gem studded brooch on a black velvet tray in a jeweller's shop!
