Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 297: Raised Cup Stitch with Twisted Chain

Hello, and welcome to another lovely stitch. The traditional Raised Cup Stitch uses Buttonhole Stitch to build up the sides of a cup. Today's Raised Cup Stitch is made up of Twisted Chain Stitch. I have also closed the cup at the top, thus forming a dome.

Have a look at Sarah's Hand Embroidery Tutorial, where you can see very clear pictures.

My photo instructions are here:

First make a triangle.

Without stitching through the fabric, make a Twisted Chain Stitch over the triangle

and then two more

Move to the second side of the triangle and add three Twisted Chain Stitches there too.

Repeat for the third side of the triangle.

Your triangle is now circular.

Continue to build up the sides, adding a Twisted Chain Stitch in the space between the previously stitches Twisted Chains.

Work your way around the cup.

If you want to make a dome, skip one space and work every other empty space.

The cup is almost closed now.

Finally, anchor the thread inside the dome.

Isn't it lovely? I think it is especially nice in variegated thread.

It is certanly 3-D!

  3. There's so much you could do with the raised cup stitch, think flower garden or tide pool creatures, etc!

  4. Raised textures are so useful, aren't they!
