Sunday Stitch School - Lesson 60: Petal Stitch

Sunday Stitch School today presents yet another stitch based on the Stem and Chain Stitches - the Petal Stitch.
I have found no Swedish name. Is there a name in your language? If you know, please leave a comment.
Updated 1: Mattia has kindly supplied me with the French name: Point de Chaînette Bouclette.
Updated 2: Deepa has reminded me that there is another name for this stitch, Pendant Chain Stitch. Also that, rather than a Stem Stitch, it is an Outline Stitch that forms the first part of the stitch. Deepa also has a great tutorial for this stitch, click here to read.
I am so grateful for any informative comments.

This is a well-known stitch and can be found in several stitch dictionaries. It makes a very pretty line of drop-shaped petals hanging from a line.

Make it like this:

I think it looks best on a curve.

Homework:

  1. Very nice! I didn't know this was a named stitch, but I have combined the individual chain with a stem stitch. I look forward to seeing your homework.

    1. Thank you Deepa,
I have updated my blogpost and added a link to your great tutorial.
Yes, of course with a STEM Stitch, the pendants wouldn't hang well, they'd fly in the wind!! OUTLINE Stitch it is.

  4. Yes, it's a pretty stitch, and I think several writers agree that it looks best on a curve.

    1. I like it on a curve, and I have seen some examples where the Chain Stitch is anchored with a long stitch that makes it look even more plant-like. This is a great stitch to experiment with!

  5. If you'd not said what it was, I would have thought it was stem stitch and separate chain stitches. Another stitch for me to try out.

    1. I am sure you could work this in two goes; first a line of Stem or Outline Stitch and then underneath, a Detached Chain Stitch for each stitch, but the Petal or Pendant Chain Stitch should be worked in one go.

  6. To get the pendants and the outline stitch 'in one go' seems more efficient.
Petal stitch is organic in look and will make up some beautiful flowers/foliage.

  7. Stitches have so many different names! Maybe you need to have a reference for each stitch stating what the numerous names are?

    1. I am trying to keep track of each stitch in TAST and SSS, but I might have to add those alternative names, too. Mary Thomas has always the alternative names listed in her dictionary.
