Updated 2: Deepa has reminded me that there is another name for this stitch, Pendant Chain Stitch. Also that, rather than a Stem Stitch, it is an Outline Stitch that forms the first part of the stitch. Deepa also has a great tutorial for this stitch, click here to read.

This is a well-known stitch and can be found in several stitch dictionaries. It makes a very pretty line of drop-shaped petals hanging from a line.
Make it like this:

Yes, of course with a STEM Stitch, the pendants wouldn't hang well, they'd fly in the wind!! OUTLINE Stitch it is.

ReplyDeleteI like it on a curve, and I have seen some examples where the Chain Stitch is anchored with a long stitch that makes it look even more plant-like. This is a great stitch to experiment with!
DeleteIf you'd not said what it was, I would have thought it was stem stitch and separate chain stitches. Another stitch for me to try out.
ReplyDeleteI am sure you could work this in two goes; first a line of Stem or Outline Stitch and then underneath, a Detached Chain Stitch for each stitch, but the Petal or Pendant Chain Stitch should be worked in one go.
