WIPW - Gilded Ruby

Work In Progress Wednesday for today shows progress on

Crazy for Crazy
where the red ruby fabric is getting gilded.

I made the Kumihimo braid longer than needed and tied up the end into a knot.
I ruched some areas on a red silk ribbon (to make 'carnations') and then stitched an undulating length of golden Chain Stitches.
Sunday Stitch School's delightful Detached Twisted Chain Stitch was stitched into a star with a red bead in the centre.
Two curves of Shell Chain were stitched, and a Laced Herringbone row.
Then I made a Dorset Button. Oh, this was fun! I will love making more, and more advanced ones for future cq blocks. I first got my inspiration from Elizabeth Healey's book Stitch, Fabric & Thread, but there are instructions in many other books too, and of course online. This link goes to a video tutorial.
I hope to have more progress next Wednesday.

  1. Red is such a perfect colour for crazy quilting, it's so rich and sumptuous, even before stitches are added to it. I can't wait to see this block when it's finished, I think it's going to be splendid!

    1. In antique crazy quilts you often find red fabric or red embellishments. It IS a great colour for cq. However, there is maybe too many patterned pieces of fabric and it is hard to know how to decorate them and the seams between them, but I LOVE my new Dorset button!

    1. As I have used a lot of printed fabric it is hard to know how to embellish each piece in the block.

  5. I think you're very good telling us all the stitches you've used. Do you remember or do you have to write them down when you do them? I would have to write them down.

    1. Before I work any of the stitches I look them up, check the instructions and then do the sewing. When I mark up the photo with the text I still have the names in my head, but a couple of weeks later and I've forgotten!
The best reference is my TAST and SSS reference charts, I am so glad I spent time making them, they give me inspiration and keep track of names and way of stitching.

    1. Thank you. The colour combination makes it very grand, the stitches themselves are not very special.

  7. The Twisted Chain star caught my eye first, leading to the Kumihimo braid and seams and then the wonderful Dorset button.
I like your use of metallic threads throughout.
    Too red? Not a bit.

    1. Thank you, Maureen.
In Sharon's book there is a lot about helping the eye move around the block to see the different details - from what you say I have managed!!!! Thank you!
