First of all I LOVE the plain Vandyke Stitch (TAST #76), but dislike the beaded version. Why? I think the beads take away the beauty of the basic stitch and I got frustrated wrapping the previous stitch.
They were just slightly better on the sampler.
Now for the Bullioned Vandyke Stitch I got even more frustrated and flustered which is a pity as I have no serious problems with the plain Bullion Knot Stitch (#19).
One more thing made me confused. Which stitch is #116 and which is #117? In the post at Pintangle it appears #116 is the beaded and #117 the bullioned, but on the list on TAST FAQ they are they opposite.
Maybe it was just not my TAST week!
I think they look great. I wouldn't know it wasn't your week.

DeleteI loved the beaded Van Dyke but not the bullion. Your bullion looks balanced. Mine had to fit into the stripe and that meant I had to modify the stitch. After 120 bullion knots I'm over that stitch.
ReplyDeleteSharon's work looked so nice I was depressed to see my own poor effort in comparison. It MIGHT be the timing, humidity, hassle over other things that made the result so disappointing. There is always another chance, another week!
DeleteHi Queenie , you are so right about the beads........these stitches are meant to be 'textural and the beads seem to spoil that effect ! In saying that ,the threads are beautiful and the stitches so neat.....to me some stitches cry out for beads and others just simply dont need them !

DeleteI will give them a second chance, and the bullioned version too, just to see if it was my mental condition that caused such poor result. You know how it is, some days one should stay away from the needle!

Well, I saw that you bit the bullet and redid yours. So I will have to do the same, they say that practise makes perfect. I don't need perfect but I want to be able to do better.

DeleteThe red beaded VanDyke stitch looks very nice. I think the rows on Aida are just the wrong thread, if I'm right you used stranded floss.VanDyke stitch works much better with perle 8 or 5. Your bullion VanDyke doesn't look so bad!
ReplyDeleteOf course you are right; the stranded floss is not the right thread for the Beaded Vandyke, so I will try to them out again with a perle. I will see if I can improve my Bullion Vandyke, too.

DeleteI like your beaded barbed wire although I don't think it would suit all situations. I could see it in my minds eye on a free form embroidery as some sort of plant life, a spiky thorn perhaps with red beads.
ReplyDeleteI think it is especially the unsuccessful stitches that we can't seem to master that are the best free form embroidery. My poor Beaded Vandyke stitches would be perfect as spiky thorny red beaded plants.
