WIPW - A New Project!

This week's Work In Progress Wednesday (WIPW) features the start of a new project! First, however, let's have a look at the ongoing

Pile 'em On
I added rough Cretan stitches for my pulled work.

Then made Buttonholed Rings for the circle.
This is how I made them:

For my Canvas work I selected three stitches:
Tent (bottom left)
Cashmere (top left)
Moorish (top right)
The light grey Coton a Broder is too thin for this gauge of the fabric...

New!  Fruity Cushion
I was recently given this wonderful book
published by Hemslöjdens Förlag, and featuring Swedish embroideries from 1950's and -60's.
Among them is the pattern for a cushion called Röd Frukt (Red Fruit) designed by Ingrid Franzén-Weiss in 1955.
I thought it was time for some embroidery with linen thread,
so picked these from my stash.
Then promptly marked the design, mounted the fabric on a frame and got started.
Watch this space!

The stitches are really building up on your Pile-em-on. Once again, I will be interested to see it finished.
That new project looks interesting. I have a number of old Scandinavian books that I have collected over the years. I think I will have a look at them again.

Can't wait to see what you do with the new Fruity Cushion. The bold, primitive pattern is tantalizing. Also, your canvas stitches are beautiful, even if the thread is too thin.

The Canvas work will make the completion of this piece somewhere in the distant future I guess...
The embroidery boom of the 50s and 60s was full of colour and striking graphic design. Work before that was more folksy or had an international feeling.

The Canvas work is my first taster of this kind of work, I sometimes find it very confusing... but with all things, time and practice are the key ingredients if one wants to move forward.

your canvas work is progressing very well and the new cushion is going to be a great project for us to follow

All I can say is "WOW"!!!

I have been enjoying your 'Pile 'em On' piece, but the new one looks really interesting. Looking forward to watching the progress.

It is a joy to see you so busy - with several projects at a time - which is quite normal among quilters and embroiderers.

The pile is getting deeper and deeper. I don't know how you are finding room for more!

Queeniepatch said...

Oh, the pile will just grow!

Queeniepatch said...

Yes, I just hope to find the time to work at these two projects regularly. Some days are filled with anything but 'needle and thread'.

I have great hopes for the new project - anyway the picture in the book is fantastic. I hope I have picked colours that will be equally attractive.

Queeniepatch said...

I've only started but hope the work will be worth a 'WOW*!

Last night I struggled for hours with a stitch and had to unpick it several times - I just could not get the directions. Then today it was easy-peasy. Sometimes one just needs to sleep on it!

the Pile them on is growing nicely. the simple Cretan stitches are interesting as pulled thread stitch. the canvas stitches are lovely. the buttonhole rings are a nice touch. thanks for sharing the way to work them. I am excited about your Swedish embroidery on cushion. the design itself is so interesting, looking forward to your progress. happy stitching!

Your buttonholed ring are beautiful and the design of your new cushion is very interesting.

The canvas work will take time to finish so I just will HAVE TO find other stitches to pile on in the centre.
The Swedish cushion has so far been fun to work on. It is now time to change colour and I am enjoying selecting a good one (hopefully!).

I found the method for making Buttonholed Rings in one of my stumpwork books; maybe I fill find other tips there for making more things to pile on in the centre circle.

The new cushion is fun to work on, and it is a long time since I worked on a slate frame so that is a novel feeling, too!

Queeniepatch said...

Thank you. The Buttonholed Rings were easy to do and I have an idea for how to use them 'with a twist'. It always feels exciting to work on a new project and I hope the cushion will be just right with the ones I already have...

How amazing to have so many different stitches in the same piece! I always like a new project - can't wait to see your progress.

Love the buttonhole rings! My first thought was, "How in the world?!" Thank you for sharing how you made them. And your new project looks just as fun!

Queeniepatch said...

There are lots of canvas stitches in the book I am using as a guide, so many I doubt I will find space for them all.
The new project is fun to work on!

Queeniepatch said...

The rings are not difficult to make and add a new dimension to Pile 'em On.
I am enjoying the new work.

Tanya said...

Those rings are amazing. Whoever thought of making three dimensional rings. What a fascinating array of stitches.

Queeniepatch said...

Such rings are often used in stumpwork embroidery (3-dimensional embroidery) and I got a new idea for rings.

Thanks for the info on how to make rings, this idea could be useful in any of my future projects. Your new project looks interesting I will look forward to seeing more

Queeniepatch said...

The rings were fun to make, please have a try.

I remember learning how to make those buttonhole rings, but never used them. They work great on your project. The new project looks very interesting! I also took a closer look at your canvas stitches and noticed you skip a thread between the stitches. I think that's why your cotton a broder doesn't work. If you take a closer look at the stitches on my pink needlepoint sampler at Flickr you can see how I stitched them.

I am so happy you take such a close look at my work! Yes, I do skip one thread. The reason - 1) it is 32 count linen and a strain on my eyes 2) I am learning so do not want to waste thread! 3) most of the coton a broder I am using is #25 but one is #16 so different weight.
YOUR work is always an inspiration!
