The Poppy

I have a friend who told me about an event in her childhood that has meant a lot to her. For a long time I toyed with the idea of making 'something' with a red poppy for her.
Last year I bought Trish Burr's excellent book 'Colour Confidence In Embroidery' and have been studying colour and shading.
Based on some old photographs and a flora, I drew the design. Then I planned how to needle paint the poppy according to the principles in the book.
Although it took some time I am rather pleased with the result of my first needle painting.

Wow! At first I thought I was looking at a photograph. You even got those fuzzy stems. When I see this,I remember poppies growing in our garden when I was just a kid. Congratulations on success at first attempt!

Queenie you have stitched an amazing poppy, the flower is so beautiful and the stem you have even got the sort of hairy bits (not sure what you call them) on it, it is so realistic beautiful

Nice! Here in California our state flower is the California Poppy. It looks very little like the red Asian ones, and is orange to yellow, and occasionally pinkish. The most common (and preferred color) being gold. :-)
